Hafod Farm is a venue I have had the pleasure of photographing a few times now, but when I arrived for Tom and Sioned’s wedding In October 2019, I was amazed by all the effort that the owners had gone to since the last time I visited. A new barn has been built with some lovely rustic touches, such as a huge wall of mirrors (not like a fun house… you’ll see what I mean in the pictures).

I made the journey through North Wales to Hafod Farm where Sioned and her bridal party were getting ready. The weather wasn’t quite on our side but as is always the way with North Wales weddings, you make the most with what you have. As always, the beatiful bride was calm, relaxed and ready to make that march down the aisle.

Hafod Farm Wedding Ceremony

Hafod Farm Wedding Photographer

The old barn at Hafod Farm is always beautifully decorated with many candles and subtle lights around the beams. Although a slighly challenging area to photograph due to not much daylight coming through the windows and the high ceilings, it is still one of my favourite wedding ceremony areas to photograph.

Sioned made her way down the aisle as she followed her bridesmaids where Tom waited and even shed a tear! Photographers love it when a groom shows genuine emotion!! I’m sure Sioned did too.

The ceremony was full of laughter and smiles as the bride and groom said I do, and then it was outside for confetti before the rain started.

Bride and Groom Wedding Photos at Hafod Farm

Once we had photographed all the family portraits inside the new barn, I took Tom and Sioned away so they could have some time alone, and also give us chance to make a start on their couples portraits. We even had an appearance from one of the dogs who lives at Hafod Farm! We were dodging the typical North Wales showers, but still managed to get some lovely photos.

The Wedding Breakfast and Speeches

So I mentioned earlier how much I loved the new barn at Hafod Farm and all the personal touches. It really is a lovely room for your wedding breakfast and speeches and looks amazing on your wedding photographs! Check out that wall of mirrors! Oh and the amazing spread but on my Anglesey Hog Roast! Without a doubt some of the best wedding food I have tasted in North Wales. The perks of being a wedding photographer hey!

Hafod Farm Evening Reception

After the amazing food and heartfelt speeches we were soon approaching the evening reception. I just had time to get a few more bride and groom wedding photos in before the evening guests arrived. Yep it was raining! I love a rainy wedding photo. It’s probably one of my favourite things about being a North Wales wedding photographer. Tom and Sioned had booked the Four Kicks band for their evening entertainment and they were amazing! Check out some of the moves on the dance floor!

Rich Miller – A North Wales Wedding Photographer

North Wales Wedding Photographer

This is me and my lot. My partner Jemma, my eldest daughter Maddie and our youngest daughter Eliza. Even being a professional photographer, I still can’t get both kids smiling and looking at the camera at the same time!
Anyway, I get asked a lot “How did you get into photography?” Or “When did you start?” As well as many other questions, so I thought I would do this little blog to answer some of those questions.
Basically, I am an award winning wedding photographer with zero qualifications to show for it!

Let’s start with – How did you get into Wedding Photography?

In all honesty, it wasn’t the plan. Back in 2012, I was working a late shift. Well what I thought was a late shift at the time. An 8pm finish now seems a breeze! But anyway, I was sat at my desk in work when I was a financial underwriter and started to look at wedding photographers (yes I should have been getting on with work!) I thought, how hard can it be? Press a button, done!

I then started to look at a DSLR camera. I had never touched any camera other than a point and click or mobile phone in my life at this point so in truth, I had no idea what I was looking at and what it all meant. But I settled on a Canon 550D with a 18-55mm lens. It cost me about £500 if I remember rightly.
That’s it! Let’s go and photograph some weddings and become a wedding photographer!

My first piece of advice…. DO NOT DO WHAT I DID! Get yourself involved with some established photographers first before you commit to anything. That £550 camera I bought, quickly escalated to about £20,000 worth of equipment over the last 9 years.

Did you learn editing or photography first?

Editing. I was browsing on Groupon one day, and seen a course reduced from about £300 to £29 which claimed to teach you essential Photoshop skills. I added it to my basket, and off to Runcorn I went for the day to learn Photoshop! Now I had some idea of how I could make my existing pictures look better.

Time to learn how to use the Canon 550D I had purchased next! Another Groupon deal in Chester which was also around £29 and taught you the basic functions of your DSLR camera. I had also learned the basics of photography with exposure and composition.

With the basic website I had built, I now needed some wedding photographs to advertise. I booked on to a course with Chris Chambers up in York where he taught his incredible photography skills but also gave us the opportunity to photograph 2 models posing as a bride and groom. These images would soon make it on my website.

Second piece of advice…DO NOT DO THIS! DO NOT USE POSED WORKSHOP IMAGES FOR YOUR PORTFOLIO. IT WORKED FOR ME BUT THERE ARE MUCH BETTER WAYS! Again, I recommend reaching out to professional photographers and asking if you can maybe shoot along side them in order to gain some experience and valuable portolio images.

How did you get your first wedding booking?

Now this is where I struck gold. My first booking didn’t come through the website or through any kind of social media.
I was studying photography at a night class in Deeside College and chance had it that I was sitting between 2 ladies who are now both very good friends. Emma, was soon to be married and asked me if I would like to be a 2nd shooter at her wedding, working alongside her main photographer Tanya Davies! If you ever get this opportunity, take it!! They are few and far between. Lisa was the other girl I was sat next to, and a couple of years down the line, I got to photograph her wedding also.
I shot alongside Tanya in 2013 at Emma’s wedding and gained so much from Tanya’s knowledge, skills and her approach. I also gained some valuable real wedding photographs which I could put on my website and social media.
Not long after that, I got my first wedding where I was the solo photographer. Friends were getting married and asked me if I wouldn’t mind taking photo’s on their wedding day, as well as being a guest. Again, even more images for me to start building my portfolio with.

What did you do before photography?

I did quite a few jobs, but most of these were all call centre based. The majority of my time was spent working for M&S Bank in Chester where I worked from 2009 until 2016 (with a brief break inbetween). I moved around the company quite a bit but spent most of my time there as an underwriter. In 2013, a job appeared on one of the job sites for an online photography tutor. This would be helping build online courses and providing support for students who are enrolled on the course. The ideal job I thought! I lasted 6 months..Let’s just say we weren’t the right fit.
Back to M&S I went, but this time via PPI where I was helping refunding customers who had been missold PPI over the years…Quite a lot by me sorry!
9 months in PPI and I was then back as an Underwriter. The slight issue was, my photography business was starting to take off a little. More and more weekend work coming in, but I was also having to work Saturday’s as my job as an Underwriter. Thankfully my managers were very accomodating and always tried to accomodate holiday requests or shift swaps so I could also photograph weddings.

When did you become a full time wedding photographer?

2016. After 3 years of photographing part time and being a weekend warrior, I made the leap in 2016. There were a few reasons for me doing this. My eldest daughter Maddie, was born in July and I thought that even I can earn just half my M&S salary by doing weddings, then I will be fine as we won’t need to pay for fulltime childcare. Thankfully, the business was growing rapidly at this point and I was photographing upwards of 40 weddings per year. Albeit at lower prices, but it meant I could be a wedding photographer on the weekends and dad during the week.

I was worried about the winter months. I was worried that I wouldn’t get any winter weddings. I decided I would still take the risk as should wedding bookings not come in, then I will surely be able to pick up some temporary work to bring in some money until wedding season began again in the Spring. Thankfully winter wedding bookings continued to come in so I didn’t need to find employment.

Maddie

It’s funny how things turn out. If it wasn’t for me having a little skive in work back in 2012, and if it wasn’t for my friends getting married then I probably would have never gone down this path. But my very first wedding as a full time wedding photographer in 2016 was at Tower Hill Barns. Those of you who follow me will be sick of me talking about Tower Hill probably. But I was booked to photograph Paul and Faz’s wedding and this was my very first time at Tower Hill. Thankfully I made an impression and have since become one of their preferred photographers and have the privilage of working at their stunning venue a hell of a lot.

TOWER Hill Barns Wedding

How are you coping since the COVID-19 restrictions?

Honestly, mostly frustrated but remaining positive. In 2020 I had 46 weddings booked. I got to shoot 4 of these. 2 of which were before lockdown. Most of these weddings have now moved to 2021 which means I am now due to shoot over 70 weddings this year! Gulp! And as for 2022, well I’m nearly fully booked. So I am remaining positive that once we are out of this storm, weddings will not be a forgotten memory.

In January, our youngest daughter Eliza entered the world. Lockdown has meant I have been able to spend even more time with Eliza, Jem and Maddie than I normally would have been able to.

The wedding industry was hit hard by COVID-19. Many wedding venues, wedding suppliers including photographers found their bulging 2020 bookings diary deplete hourly to almost zero. So…What are we to do? The creative industries all came together to do what we love! We were able to use the time to showcase our products, our skills and have a bloody good laugh whilst we were at it!

Cassie from Cassie M Bridal is one of North Wales’ leading hair and makeup artists. As well as being super talented, she is an awesome lady to have around on your wedding day. Cassie had the idea of creating a styled shoot and asked if I would be involved to photograph it. Naturally I said yes! Having built up so many positive relationships with wedding suppliers, wedding venues and couples over the years, I was also able to offer my input.

We had decided Tower Hill Barns would be our location of choice. Why? Well the venue is a favourite of mine. It is stunning inside and out and the wedding team at Tower Hill Barns were more than happy to accomodate us.

As for the theme…..Well we kind of went on a tangent and just wanted to go super modern and not your usual approach. We were able to call on good friends and a previous bride and groom of mine, Emma and Phill. When I photographed Emma and Phill’s wedding, they were so easy to work with infront of camera, and Emma also has a black wedding dress! Yes!! To add to this, we thought bright neon’s large floral decorations and smoke bomb’s would make for awesome photographs!

Karen Lesley Bridal had kindly donated us 2 white wedding dresses which not only looked amazing on Emma, but also on the Flower Arch provided and designed by Vivid Floral Design.

Whilst Cassie was doing Emma’s hair and make-up, it gave myself and Mathew from Mathew Lloyd Videography chance to starting setting up some photos and bounce ideas off each other.

Natalie from Glamour Events Hire was kind enough to showcase some of her neon backdrops. We set these up inside the old barn at Tower Hill so the neon would really stand out.

Snowdonia Wedding Proposal

Snowdonia Wedding Proposal

Dan’s Snowdonia Proposal – Becky said yes!

An email appears in my inbox and instantly i’m intrigued and excited about the contents. Dan was planning to propose to his girlfriend Becky whilst they were on holiday in North Wales. Although I have photographed lots of weddings all around North Wales, I had never actually photographed a proposal.
Dan and Becky travelled up from London, and once I had got chatting to Dan we were able to run through a few ideas. With Dan not being from North Wales, it was great for me to be able to suggest locations.
We had settled on Llyn Idwal in Snowdonia. This is one of my favourite locations ever. It’s extremely accessible and is surrounded with large waterfalls, imposing mountain tops and stunning views.

The morning of the proposal, I obviously couldn’t phone Dan or make myself known to Dan in anyway as we didn’t want to ruin the surprise. It was just a quick text to tell him I was wearing a black coat and to follow me at about a 200 meters distance until we reached Llyn Idwal.

As with any holiday, and any new place you are going to want to take lots of personal photos and selfies for your own collection. A quick glance over my shoulder to make sure I was still in Dan’s view whilst Becky had no idea what was about to happen.

Once we reached Llyn Idwal, I veered off to a position where I knew I would get a good shot of Dan down on one knee….. I had 2 cameras which were obvious to Becky and anyone else so I was just pretending to take photo’s of the landscape. Whilst I was doing this, Dan was trying to walk Becky over to where I was photographing but Becky was reluctant as she was worried she might get in the way of my “landscape photos”.

Not to worry! Like I say, Llyn Idwal has so many amazing surrounding views, it really didn’t matter where Dan proposed.

Down on one knee he goes, I can’t hear anything apart from Becky’s giggles. It was so windy but then they embraced and I knew Becky said yes!
It was then time to introduce myself and ensure Becky I was not some weirdo with a camera following them around.

Steven and Kim’s Llyn Gwynant Wedding

I first met Steven and Kim for their engagement shoot at Llyn Idwal in Snowdonia, North Wales. Llyn Idwal is a favourite place of mine to photograph. The beautiful views of the Snowdonia landscape means I could literally spend hours up there discovering hidden North Wales gems.

When I suggested Llyn Idwal to Steven and Kim, they were as keen as I was to capture some awesome photos as it was an area that they had visited before, but weren’t too familiar with.
We had an amazing evening and ended the shoot, just as the sun started to set over North Wales.

Steven and Kim both admitted they were uneasy having their photograph taken, hence why they booked an engagement shoot; but they absolutely smashed it and looked so comfortable in front of the camera.

Hopefully you can see why I love photographing in North Wales so much. Especially in Llyn Idwal. Lots of mountatins, rocky paths, waterfalls, wildlife and beautiful skies.

Meanwhile, I was over in a cottage in the middle of nowhere for Kim’s bridal prep where she was being made up by the talented Keena. Spirits were high, and laughter was loud as everyone made their final preparations. I was lucky enough to be working with Jo from Jo Gendle films for the first time.

Following the drinks reception, Steven and Kim and arranged with Llyn Gwynant to plant a wedding tree on the land of the campsite which will remain there as a memory of the wedding day. I have never done this before but what an amazing idea! I hope to see more muddy heels, spades and watering cans with future weddings.

Llyn Gwynant Wedding Photography

Kim and Steven were amazing and were up for any ideas me and Neal threw at them. We really wanted to head down to the lake for some photographs but thought, it’s a bit unfair on Kim asking her to walk down in her beautiful dress. Now even though I think she would have done, Neal was more than happy to play Parker and drive the happy couple down so we could capture some awesome shots.

Before long, it was time to head back to Llyn Gwynant Barn for the speeches and wedding breakfast. The barn was decorated beautifully with thoughtful touches from the venue and lovely ideas from Steven and Kim.

After the speeches, there was still so much more we could have photographed around Llyn Gwynant…So we did! All this before the happy couples evening surprise which very few people knew about.

Steven and Kim’s surprise was, they had been having dance lessons prior to the wedding and were going to perform a jive for us all. In my mind I’m thinking….This could be awesome, or awkward. It was AMAZING! Kim’s wedding dress and heels weren’t quite jive friendly so a quick change and we were all in awe of the fantastic job they had done.

Lloyd and Victoria’s Soughton Hall Wedding

Lloyd and Victoria got married back in 2019 on one of the hottest days of the year. I arrived in Oswestry in the morning for Victoria’s bridal prep where I was greeted by her lovely family, before we headed on over to St Oswalds Church for the wedding ceremony.

As is always the way time flies on your wedding day and before we knew it, Victoria’s proud Dad had arrived in good spirits ready to see Victoria in her wedding dress and walk her down the aisle.

The traffic was a little busy so Lloyd was kept waiting at the alter to sweat a little bit longer, but once Victoria had arrived, he shed a tear and I’m sure breathed a sigh of relief.

Gavin & Alison’s Tyn Dwr Hall Wedding

As I look back through Gavin and Alison’s wedding photographs from Tyn Dwr Hall, I am reminded of what an amazing day and such an incredible experience it was to be a part of. Now, all weddings are unique in their own way but Gavin and Alison’s Tyn Dwr Hall wedding had so many firsts for me. This was my first wedding I have photographed with Chinese traditions. I had no idea what to expect, but soon found myself amongst the fun!

Gavin & Alison have been kind enough to provide me with their story from when they first met, to when they became husband and wife. But before that, here are a few of my favourite photographs from Gavin and Alison’s Tyn Dwr Hall Wedding.

Gavin & Alison’s Story…

Gavin and I first met when we were both still at university. We were introduced by a family friend and as much as Gavin says it was love at first sight, it took him nearly 3 years before he made the move! To be fair, Gavin’s in the military and was away in Afghanistan for a while. This did not stop us from keeping in touch until he came back home, to which we officially got together!
I’m a specialist nurse and so there are many who laugh and joke how clearly professionals in uniforms attract!
We were together for 4 years before Gavin popped the question in Palma, Spain. It was a trip to celebrate Gavin’s birthday! So who would have thought he was planning his way of ensuring the ring clears airport security, not to lose the ring and ensure I didn’t find the ring for the duration of the trip! Now I know I was actually carrying the ring for most of the trip and left it unoccupied for a quick swim in the sea! We were out having a meal for Gavin’s birthday, by the sea side when Gavin waited for the sunset before popping the question! Our special holiday ended up being a double celebration with a lot of emotions!
Choosing our venue took about 4.5months from the time we got engaged. Gavin’s from Glasgow and I’m from Aberystwyth, Wales but we both live in Manchester so as expected, choosing a location was not easy! We have family all over the UK and abroad! In keeping with Chinese traditions, our families had wanted us to have a Chinese banquet in addition to a traditional wedding. It was our dream to have a countryside wedding and having it in Wales nearer to home was perfect! Being so specific, we did our research online before taking a few weekend trips to North Wales to view a few wedding venues. We had viewed 5 venues but when we saw Tyn Dwr Hall we absolutely fell head over heels for it and knew we didn’t need to look any further! We loved every bit of the venue from the unique yurts to the cottage and how personal our wedding planner Shannon and the staff were.

It’s safe to say our wedding was not like any other! We both have big families and knew some were unable to attend the traditional Chinese banquet in Glasgow so we made a decision to incorporate some Chinese traditions on our wedding day. This was not easy to arrange and initially hard to picture; a Chinese Scotsman, with his groomsmen facing a variety of challenges to win his bride!

These challenges we set out by the bridesmaids as they haggle with the groom and the groomsmen on arrival and give a lucky red packets money (lai sei) for the bridesmaids to then surrender the bride! The groom then finds the brides red shoe inside the house and then presents this to the bride, the concept being the bride is not complete until the husband recovers her shoe.

As a bride, it is also tradition to wear a red Chinese dress known as ‘qipo’ which represents fortune and happiness.

The red dress is also worn for the tea ceremony, which is another major Chinese tradition. The ceremony is predominantly for the bride and grooms’ parents and other family members from the same generation. This takes place following the main wedding ceremony so Gavin and I as newlyweds paid respect to our elders. The family are served in order, starting with the groom’s parents before progressing from oldest to youngest. It was important we kneeled on red cushions whilst serving the tea from a red tea set for luck. After each family member takes a sip of their tea, they offer the couple a red packet with lucky money or jewellery inside. On the wedding day some even offered us some wise marriage advice! This luckily went smoothly on the day but actually took a lot of pre-planning to ensure we had a quick process with switching tea cups and finding family members!!! The bridesmaids and groomsmen played such a vital role and the final Chinese tradition is us as newlyweds giving them a red Lai sei packet with lucky money inside as a thank you.

Doubletree Chester Wedding Photographer | Maz & Poppy

The Doubletree by Hilton in Chester is an amazing place for your wedding and has lots of opportunities for stunning wedding photography. The Abbey Suite is where your wedding would be held, and has lots of rustic charm with bare brick and wooden beams throughout.
The grounds of the Doubletree in Chester are vast and offer so many different locations to have your wedding photographs. I particularly like the rear gardens for bride and groom wedding portraits.
I caught up with Poppy and her bridesmaids on the morning of the wedding during bridal prep. This time I had the pleasure of working with the talented Victoria and Anna from Cheshire Bridal Hair and Makeup.
Maz was greeting wedding guests prior to the ceremony and looking extremely relaxed. We had a few quick photographs with Maz and his groomsmen before the I do’s.

The wedding ceremony was full of laughter and smiles. Poppy and Maz were a pleasure to photograph all day. Not once did the smiles fade. Even when Poppy’s Dad was embarrassing her during his speech!
We covered lots of photographs during the day and even during the evening too. Making the most of the large fountain and pond at the Doubletree Chester, we were able to create some lovely night lit photographs.

The Doubletree Chester has so many features I love from a wedding venue and is one of my favourite wedding venues to photograph.
If you are getting married at the Doubletree Chester, I’d love to hear from you.

Tower Hill Barns Wedding Food

Tower Hill Barns Wedding Food

There are so many reasons why I love my job. I love meeting new people and capturing your awesome wedding days mostly. But I also get to see new places and taste some amazing food!

Tower Hill Barns in North Wales, has some of the best wedding food I have ever had the joy of tasting. I am a massive foodie (eating not cooking!), and when Jo and her team from Tower Hill Barns asked me to attend their Winter Wedding Food tasting day, and take some photographs of just some of the offerings, I couldn’t refuse. Especially knowing that I would get to eat what was put in front of me once I had finished photographing it. I left Tower Hill Barns that day about a stone heavier and in serious need of an afternoon nap!

All of Tower Hill Barns’ menu is created with the bride and groom in mind. There is so much to choose from and it can be personalised to your requirements or seasonal vibes. The wedding food I had the pleasure of tasting was themed for a Winter wedding. All the food at Tower Hill Barns is sourced locally in North Wales and prepared at the venue.

A Chester Engagement Shoot!

A Chester Engagement Shoot!

Matt and Jess, are due to be married at Soughton Hall in North Wales, and I am so excited to be their wedding photographer for the day.
With us all living so close to Chester, it only seemed right that we caught up at the Grosvenor Park for a chat before we cracked on with some candid photography.

Chester has so many amazing opportunities for engagement and wedding photography, but we chose to stay close to the Grosvenor Park, as the colours were amazing. It was an Autumn afternoon and the orange leaves looked amazing. We ventured off slightly around the Chester walls before heading back home.

We hadn’t long started before the photobombers came. I’m not talking about cyclists or people walking their dogs. We had an abundance of squirrels who were all wanting their photograph taking with Jess and Matt! Jess particularly got on well with the squirrels, feeding them nuts. I am a bit more reserved and was happy to photograph from a distance.

It’s not long now until Jess and Matt’s wedding day in North Wales, and I can’t wait to be part of it!
Here are a few of my favourite photographs from their Chester engagement shoot.

An Awesome Chester Wedding at Oddfellows

An Awesome Chester Wedding at Oddfellows

A Chester Wedding! Dale and Natalie were married at Oddfellows in Chester. Oddfellows is not only one of my favourite city centre hangouts, but it makes an amazing wedding venue! It is a unique, modern and classy bar, restaurant and hotel which regularly plays host to many live acts as well as exclusive weddings in their upstairs area with private terrace.

Natalie, her bridesmaids and mum were getting ready just down the road at Oddfellows apartments. I had never actually been to these before, but wow they are incredible. They continue with the modern and trendy theme throughout.

I was assisted by Neal from Neal Mcveigh Photography throughout the day. We all covered some serious mileage around Chester! I am a Cestrian at heart being born there, and love exploring around the walls, the Grosvenor Park, the River Dee and the Eastgate Clock. Obviously we were going to use all these locations in Dale and Natalie’s wedding photos!

But first…After much laughter and fun during bridal prep, it was a short hop over to Oddfellows where Dale and Natalie said I do. I’m sure both Dale and Natalie were pretty nervous but the nerves weren’t really on display. Just lots of smiles! Myself and Neal captured many candid photos up until the wedding breakfast as well as the most have family photographs. Oddfellows has a unique outdoor bar area which looks so cool and make an awesome backdrop for an alternative wedding photo.

Following the wedding breakfast, it was time to get away from everybody for a little bit so Dale and Natalie could have some time together. Well….Kind of. We went exploring Chester which is a pretty busy city anyway, but when you’ve got 2 photographers and a beautiful white wedding dress, you’re going to attract some attention.
We all had such a amazing, relaxed time whilst out and about. There was 1 or 2 more formalities though. Cutting the cake and first dance. After first dance, Dale and Natalie jumped in a taxi and headed from Oddfellows to Chester city centre. We decided to do a couple of pictures at the Eastgate clock. These are still some of my favourite pictures I’ve ever taken!

Thank you Dale and Natalie for being so awesome. Here are a few of my favourites from your wedding day.
